During one of our courses students have to study individuals (normally children in nurseries) and write detailed case studies about their condition or progress. It is not a clinical situation but an academic exercise. The parents provide their consent to the study and the writing up of the report (in writing). The report is anonymous and neither the child or the nursery setting is identified.
A parent has enquired about seeing the report written on their child.
One of our lecturers has raised the following concerns:
How do we maintain the student's right to confidential assessment?
All of the work is strictly anonymised and so does the parent have a right to see it?
What if the students have identified an area of concern (eg autistic type behaviour)?
My feeling is that the parent has a right to make a subject access request on the childs behalf (bearing in mind the age of nursery children) and should be given the same information, ie a copy of the report, that the children would be given if they made the application in their own right.
I would welcome any further advice on this
Kind regards
Wendy
