Hi,
Before I start, I know there will be people who are not fans of Google, and I know that equally some people will like Google, so I understand that this might launch a bit of a debate...
I belong to a regional committee of an organisation, and we regularly organise events. In an attempt to make the organising of these events easier for those people responsible for the events (on top of their day job!) we have been exploring the use of Google Documents to create a form for which the URL will be sent out to potential delegates to book.
The way Google Docs works is that the creator of the form receives all the responses to the form in a spreadsheet. As far as I can work out the person who inputs onto the form does NOT have access to this spreadsheet, and therefore cannot see the other people's responses. Access to the spreadsheet must be granted by the owner of the spreadsheet (and we are assuming here that this person is aware of the security measures they must take to ensure they do not share it incorrectly).
Google themselves have security statements about Documents ( http://docs.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=87149 ) and about sharing the spreadsheet ( http://docs.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=99058 )
Data Protection statements aside (we have a statement which will explain why we are requesting the delegates personal information and how it will be stored - naturally!), can anyone advise me if it is safe to use Google Documents for storing personal data (with the consent of the applicant)? I am seeking reassurance that what I've suggested is acceptable, but don't know a lot about web security.
Thank you in advance,
Michelle Peel
