No I think you have misunderstood, what I am saying is not to provide info in its entirety (cause it contains some that is relevant). What I meant to say was if you can satisfy it is directly connected to the investigation then provide the "additional" info but ensuring you extracting the information rather just handing over the documentation. By the way based on the info you have provided, I personally disagree with your take for a court order as opposed to the s29 in this case only. However, there are many variables when making a decision and I may not have them all on your post, so I am only going on what you have shared of course.
Sorry if my earlier post was misleading.
Many thanks
Trish

Hi Trish,
Thanks for your response, its been a mixed bag of responses, but most have said that a court order is preferable. We've taken legal advice and they have come back with the same mainly to cover our behinds so we are going to ask for one I think. It just seemed to me that providing the entire contents of someone's correspondence was an extra step to merely providing a contact address, telephone number etc and some sort of warrant or court order for this level of information seemed more appropriate than just a S29.
Best regards

Hi Matt
No brainer, as far as I can tell from the information provided it is all part and parcel of the original criminal investigation, I would release - if we had had the request.
Many thanks
Trish

Subject: S29 Police Request
Hi All,
I would appreciate some advice on the following:
We have received a request from the police for information concerning a former student wanted in connection with criminal damage offences across numerous areas and countries. They have asked for:
-Address and contact number of the individual
-Course attended
-Whether they have been subject to any internal disciplinary procedures
All these seem fine and we have a S29 notice and consider this suitable for disclosure. However they have also asked for:
-The entire contents of the student's e-mail in order to establish whether the student has been corresponding with other suspects on their list
-The content of the student's other electronic files in particular photographs to establish whether the offences are being documented by the suspected offenders
I have major concerns about these elements and Im not sure if it comes within the remit of a S29. I think I would prefer to see a warrant or court order before we provide access to someones personal correspondence. Has anyone else been involved in anything similar? All views welcome.
best regards
Matt Cooper
