Hi all, I have been testing the dragon app on my ipad and it can have issues with corporate/institutional wife that may block the way it speaks to the server. The actual service is really rather good and efficient and I could see it being much more useful than many of the other speech to text, also it doesn't require the same degree of training . However it still requires adjustment of how the user speaks and can have issues with accents.

Yes the free app (also available for iphones) sends your speech to a server (in the UK I believe) which then sends back transcribed text. As Alastair says if there is no reception or problems with the connection, the otherwise impressive service won't work.
The potential to revolutionise mobile communication is clearly just around the corner now, indeed with a good connection, it is already here. People can write letters, emails, reports etc. using a phone! However the full voice recognition engine cannot yet be run from phones. But it won't be long
I suspect..

Is it not a webservice? - in which case you need to be connected to the Internet. Also if there was slow traffic for any reason - in which case it might not work that smoothly....

That is impressive indeed
Wonder why they're giving it (Dragon) away for free for the ipad..
