I understand your reply in that you refer to school. What about students who are post compulsory education i.e. 17+?
I have received recommendation that we must seek the consent of the student before speaking/corresponding with parents. There seems to be no clear law which states that once a student reaches the age of non-compulsory education, the College (or training establishment) has no right to speak/correspond with parents about their child's education.
I would like some clarification on this issue.

So far as I am aware this is not age restricted. If an educational
record as defined in the regs exists the school must supply it to a
qualifying parent. Consent of the pupil is not an issue as the right is
of the parent. For example my daughter left school two years ago and is
now 20. Her former school must deal with my request if I lodge it.
Not sure quite what you mean by the second query. However when a school
transfers records to a new school it does so as a statutory requirement
- consent is not needed.

Hi there,
I'd like to repost this -
The question is effectively up to what age does a parent have access to
the educational record without the students consent?
An additional question... how about the students school - if it is a
school sending their student (usually 14+) to the College to study can
we just give the school access to the educational record we maintain?
Do we need the consent of the student?
Best wishes,
Jon

Subject: [data-protection] Parental access to student records
Hi everyone,
I have a query on parental access to student academic records.
We are a general FE College with students from 14 to 90+ years of age
and both state and privately funded.
The Education (pupil information) (England) Regulations seem to give the
parent a right of access to a childs educational record. It 'appears'
to consider this as a person of 'compulsory school age' which I think is
still to age 16 at the moment.
My take on this is that we could provide parents access to their childs
record up to the age of 17 when it then becomes a matter for DPA and a
student to agree that access.
Am I correct in this?
Can anyone point me to some specific policy web links?
Thank you,
Jon
