Many of the charities I work with have a clause in their constitutions
saying that anything put in first class post will be deemed to have arrived
two or three days later. This seems to suggest that there is (or has been
in the past) an assumption that Royal Mail delivers.
Royal Mail also offers additional services with additional levels of
security, including full tracking.
Obviously stuff does go missing/get stolen, and this is well-enough reported
that you wouldn't get far by claiming that you trusted the ordinary post
implicitly. But new passports are sent through the post, so it's obviously
more secure than dropping your package on the street and hoping that someone
picks it up and takes it to its destination.
Has anyone come up with or come across a clear set of principles for sending
documents that contain personal data?
