Apparently they collected the MAC address[1] as well. It may even be the
case that the SSID is one of the "unnecessary and extra" things they
collected. I'd certainly use the MAC number (bound to be unique, and a
consistent length) rather than do geo-location from thousands of APs all
called "Dlink" (or whatever).
[1] A number not unlike a mobile phone IMEI, but not to be confused with
its IP Address.
