1 x Dyslexia Learning Adviser - Maternity Leave Cover - To commence 31st August 2010
for approximately 12 months - 3 Days per Week (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 21 hours)
Starting salary £36,861 (Incl. LWA) p.a. pro rata
The University of Westminster is seeking a permanent 0.6 Dyslexia Learning Adviser and a Dyslexia Learning Adviser to cover for maternity leave.
You will be based within the Disability Services team and your role will be to act as a central point of contact providing advice and support for prospective and current students with Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLDs) ie dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia. You will also be required to provide study skills support to students with SpLDs at the University of Westminster and to contribute to the development of university policies and procedures on specific learning difficulties and to staff awareness.
You will join a team of two Dyslexia Learning Advisers, two Disability Advisers, two administrators and the Disability Services Manager as part of the University’s wider Student Support Services. We also have academic Disability Tutors allocated for each of the Schools and a designated Disability Officer in each of four libraries.
You will be qualified to degree level and hold a recognised qualification in teaching people with SpLDs in HE accredited by the British Dyslexia Association and/or PATOSS. You should have experience of dealing with casework and advising students with specific learning difficulties in HE and of delivering study skills support for students with specific learning difficulties in HE. You will also have an understanding of a range of disabilities, with up-to-date knowledge of the Disability Discrimination Act and its implications for students in higher education.
You will need excellent verbal and written communication skills, and be able to work with people from a wide variety of backgrounds, experiences and expectations, demonstrating a commitment to equality of opportunity.
