Hi Natalya,
I've just been given some very helpful advice and when I've written it up I'll fwd it to you.
But your idea of an alternative exam is very sensible and I'll be exploring that.

Me too actually! The student originally wanted to use Dragon which from a
technical standpoint I'm wary of (I don't believe I can effectively
support it in the event of difficulties and that's before we look at
version differences or locking down a student's own laptop) and then we
were asked "Will Dragon work with Hebrew?"
I was already asking the department to consider Scribe as an alternative
option but your post Claire has just made me realise (Friday Brain!?) that
that might be just as complex!
My very initial "oh yeah" thoughts on this is to start looking at
alternative assessment in the form of maybe a viva or recorded Q&A session
where the $language speaking tutor could request certain words spelled out
as a sample set from the student and the student provides most of their
answers verbally. Also the question of whether spelling, punctuation and
grammar are competencies in the exam and how reasonable it is to expect
some students to meet those?
If anyone has any ideas offlist to Claire I'd be really grateful if you
could CC me in on [log in to unmask] and I shall be watching this
thread carefully!
All the best
Natalya
