Hi Heather,
Re: auditory processing difficulties
I think audiologists do have expertise in this area, at least in diagnosis. This is advertised as being of benefit: https://www.phonakpro.com/uk/b2b/en/products/fm/receivers/isense.html
(iSense - previous product called edulink - see photo of 'Scott Andrews') - I'd be interested to know if anyone has experience of students/adults using this. This is like good practice in 'classroom management' for hard of hearing students, ie addressing the issue of background noise. Again, people working with SpLDs will have ideas to contribute - in terms of making teaching/communications more accessible (written instructions/back up...).
For sound sensitivity (hyperacuity?) - I think there are strategies for lessening the noise (quiet environment, use of headphones in library), or continued exposure and psychological techniques to lessen the physiological and/or emotional response to the noise.
Not my area of expertise - just some thoughts which may (or may not!) be useful.
Best wishes,
Sheenagh

Subject: Advice
Dear All
We have a student who has disclosed a hearing impairment and auditory
processing problems. The student has explained that background noise in a
crowded room poses difficulties for hearing lectures in addition they
experience sensitivity to pen tapping etc. They stated that they have acute
hearing. What technical aids would assist this student please? Is there
anything else that could be suggested? From basic knowledge some radio aids
are quite specific to the person.
The student is not elibilible for a needs assessment report and as such I am
not sure what technology assist the student.
Thanks in advance.
Heather
