As budget holder I carry out an assessment of need for any non-DSA
student and agree with the student on a package of support with
reference to our own departmental budget. I think it is almost
impossible to settle on a ceiling figure for this kind of thing, as no
two students are the same and there are so many variables, including not
just the nature of the disability but the specifics of the academic
programme and the availability of particular types of support either
within the host institution or locally.
At Queen Mary academic departments have traditionally managed to avoid
significant contributions to the cost of such support, with central
budgets being the default location for such funding, although I don't
think this constitutes good practice as the student is invariably seen
as someone else's responsibility.
