Dear List members in Universities and Colleges
Here at the University of Leeds all Subject Access requests are handled centrally by the Legal Adviser's Office which is part of the University Secretariat. In practice I respond to the majority of requests in my role as Data Protection Officer and the remainder are handled by the University's Legal Adviser.
We are considering whether an alternative way of handling requests would be feasible such as devolving the task to Faculty level, with this office continuing to vet the material before it is sent to the Data Subject.
I would be grateful for any information about:
* the arrangements in place in other Universities and Colleges,
* whether any change to a different way of handling requests has been considered or adopted
* the advantages or disadvantages of the way you handle Subject Access requests
* any recommendations you would make
For information, here at Leeds we have about 20 to 25 SARS a year, usually associated with grievances, appeals, complaints or progression problems, split approximately 50/50 between staff and students.
Thank you for your help
Sue
