Hello Louise,
We have a fairly established Disabled Students Induction (DSI). DSI was
developed from research with disabled students and aims to ease the
transition into higher education. Students have opportunities to meet each
other, current students and key support staff; and there is also time to
get to know the campus and city centre. We try to ensure it is a good
balance of academic support, welfare, and student activities, eg Students'
Union and Sports Solent.
We identify potential students throughout the year and invite those who we
think would benefit most from the chance to attend prior to the main intake
(final attendance is usally about 17). The event takes place over the
Thursday and Friday before Freshers' Week, running from 12noon on the
Thursday to 2pm on the Friday.
We also hold three timetabled briefing sessions as part of Faculty
Freshers' week activities. The briefings consist of a short presentation
about our services and how students confirm their support. We use the rest
of the time to take students to our rooms to register them. We find this
useful as they then know where we are when they want to find us again.
Last few years we had approx 120 students attend these briefings.
I hope this helps.
Cheers,
Andrea.

The University recognises the social model of disability, which establishes
that everyone is equal and demonstrates that it is society which erects
barriers that prevent disabled people participating and restricts their
opportunities.
