Personally, I would not rely on this case too much as the facts can be
distinguished easily. Essentially, it involved a case where the data subject
provided thousands of pages of category(e) personal data to a data
controller and where the data controller had difficulty.
Note two things: cate(e) personal data and (b) most (if not all) personal
data provided by data subject.

I do know of a court decision which went the other way.
Ezsias v Welsh Ministers : only reasonable and proportionate searches
need be made. And you take into account cost, time, difficulty etc.
Some doubt that this is a correct interpretation of Section 7/8 DPA, but
its law for the time being!

Subject: [data-protection] trying to track down case details relating to
disproportionate effort
I hope someone can provide some details on this, which has been in the
back
of my mind for some time.
I believe there was a case some years ago which went to the Tribunal. An
individual had made a subject access request and received some
information,
however they did not believe it was everything that was held and
requested
the information which was held on servers. This was refused claiming
disproportionate effort, however the Tribunal said that as the
information was
personal data and held it should be provided.
I have tried various searches but have been unable to locate the details
of
this case.
Can anyone help? Am I even remembering this right?
Hopefully yours
