Hi all
I have a reference issue.
We were provided with a reference for a person who had been offered a job.
As a result of this reference the applicant had their job offer withdrawn.
The applicant has applied to see the reference (which took the form of an
email exchange rather than a formal reference). There was no mention of
confidentiality at any point during the referee's exchange with our staff
member.
Initially the referee did not have a problem with us disclosing but said
they were under the impression that the reference had been provided in
confidence. They have now come back again and said (after consulting with
their head of HR) that it is their company policy that all references are
provided in the strictest of confidence and have asked that I do not
disclose.
I do not believe the content of the reference to be confidential and I feel
that the subject should see it so they can challenge any potential
inaccuracies. I think the company are worried about having provided a
slightly negative reference.
Anyone dealt with something similar? Any thoughts welcome.
Cheers
