Without wanting this to become a massive 'me too' thread, I am likewise more concerned about missing potentially helpful postings than I am about finding the odd one or two 'personal' messages posted. Those I can always delete without reading all the way through...
Reconfiguring the list does seem a trifle overenthusiastic, and in fact, is more onerous than the additional deleting (I nearly sent this message to the sender and not to the List).

I have to say I share these concerns, particularly as one would hope
that staff and students working/learning within the sector have the
level of email skills needed to reply off-list if necessary.
