Hi Pauline,
I would expect that most Trusts/Funding sources would not be keen to
fund such a request ads they would, quite rightly, hold that this
provision should be part of the core business of any University.
If you are lobbying for an additional post then there are 3 main
arguments:
1. The post is required for the HEI to be DDA compliant; (Several
sources of evidence can be used it support this, including the Code of
Practice for HEIs and the HEFCE recommendations for baseline provision
for disabled students
2. The post will increase the number of students who claim DSAs and
therefore increase the amount of Disability Premium Funding that the
Institution receives.
3. Increased support for disabled students is cost effective as a
proactive approach reduced the time taken up dealing with problems that
arise throughout a student's journey through the institution. (Numbers
of costly complaints may also be reduced.)
If the PT postholder (or the proposed post) would be assisting in the
provision of Support Workers/Dyslexia Tutors and other NM Helpers, then
it would be worth examining if you as an institution are recovering the
direct costs associated with this service. (Give me a ring/email if you
would like more info on this).

Subject: funding query
Dear Colleagues,
Please excuse my ignorance as I'm not very familiar with this area and I
can see from the archives that there are some veritable experts out
there!
We currently have one part-time member of staff who does a lot of work
supporting students with disabilities. Recent evidence would seem to
suggest that this is a growing area as there appear to be more and more
students who declare a disability when they enrol and who are then
directed to us for help using the library. We were therefore wondering
whether there are any organisations or charities to whom we could
possibly apply for funding in order to employ a second person to help in
this area of work. If anyone knows of any such organisation that might
be prepared to fund a new position could you please let me know? Any
help you could offer would be gratefully received.
Regards,
Pauline.
