Another angle is that if the organisation routinely publishes lists of
people who have "left", and yet it's clear that someone who wasn't on
that list is no longer employed, then the remaining staff will often (I
have seen this happen) assume (probably quite rightly) that the person
in question was dismissed and the company was trying to airbrush them
from history.
In fact, it sometimes becomes quite a fun game, especially when the
people concerned are at a high level and you really would expect to have
been told they'd gone, rather than just wandering past an empty office
one day.
To bring an IT aspect into this, some organisations have a culture of
people emailing to say they are leaving, and generally wishing their
former colleagues well. Conclusions can often be drawn by the timing of
such announcements (planned, sudden etc), and whether or not they were
posted by the person themselves or the HR department referring to them
in the 3rd person...
