We are in the process of reviewing the security of research data sets (in particular those containing personal information) which are held on laptops and portable devices. We currently recommend the use of Trucrypt encryption software for staff who need to take data out of the office but one of our sponsors is requiring the use of PGP software for encryption of their data and we are considering wider use of encryption for all research data.

I would be grateful if any group members who have had experience of implementing Trucrypt or PGP software with large datasets would be willing to share any issues they have encountered in the process.

We are also going to need to check how the encryption software interacts with our network backup procedures and whether integrity of data can be guaranteed when encrypted backed-up data is retrieved so any experiences in this area would also be welcome.
