Of course it's a bad thing. The cost to securing up the IT system outside of the workplace is significantly higher than the savings made by not paying staff for their extra work. Also consider that they may be taking it home because they're not productive in work and have fallen behind with tasks. That isn't worth spending money on to improve IT systems in peoples' houses for that reason.
You would imagine the people who are making the effort to do extra work would get everything right when they choose to do so but the penalty for not doing the work, I would imagine, is greater than the other factors. Losing their job would cost thousands of pounds so they don't want that. A speeding ticket is only £60 so they might risk one of those on the way home. A data protection breach doesn't cost them a thing so it doesn't matter. That old chestnut.

But not on your own personal non organisation supplied equipment. That is the point
It requires a major change in corporate culture for people to be provided with equipment at home in order to demonstrate their allegiance to this sort of unpaid overtime.
