Chris,
I'm so glad you raised this.
I was simply astounded to be told recently that the ICO does not recall
having been approached by BSi when they were drawing up BSI 7858 but that
BSI claim they took advice.
For me BSI 7858 seems to encourage the excessive collection of personal
information eg. the standard provides sample forms to be reproduced by
organisations. Few that I have come across have been amended to take
account of local circumstances or to reflect the level of risk. For instance a
number of organisations blindly ask for details of driving convictions
irrespective of whether the individual is to be employed in driving positions.
Also I'm aware that some English based organisations employ umbrella
agencies to obtain disclosures for them via Disclosure Scotland oblivious to
the advice on Disclosure Scotland's website that " no proper standard or
enhanced disclosure [can] be provided by Disclosure Scotland for a post where
the work is in England, Wales or Northern Ireland".
Vetting is no longer about reducing real risk - it's an industry fuelled by
backside covering!
rgds,
Kevin
