Hi Mike
We have some franchised colleges and this area has always been a little
grey.
The way it has worked is that the franchised college deals with any
disability related issue BUT if they require help, we are available for
advice.
An example of this: We (the main college) use the services of Surrey
Support Services, their very skilled advisory teachers assess students
with physical disabilities, VI and HI.
A student with a HI went to a franchised college last year and we
arranged for Surrey to assess the student as the franchised college did
not have the expertise. The franchised college would have to then put
the recommendations in place. As it happens the student got abusive and
sent threatening texts to the assessor (not even having met her) and it
all went pear shaped - but in principle, that is how we do things.

Subject: Agreements with partner colleges
Dear All
Could people provide any general details about how they deal with
students
on courses in partner colleges (mainly FE). In terms of disability
services do you leave it entirely to the partner college to sort out?
Does
it depend on agreements reached when the course is drawn up? It seems
more
clear cut for directly funded students but what about indirectly funded
students? What if you are aware that the partner college is not very
clued
up on DSA etc or that term-time only staff won't be in over the summer
to
put support in place for the start of term. Do you tend to step in, in
order to ensure support is available (given that are ultimately your
students?) Any information would be helpful.
Would anyone be interested in writing some guidance for FE/HE with me on
this topic using their knowledge of the area?
Regards
