You can't even always rely on your just your birth certificate anymore,
more and more places are refusing to accept them as ID. The DVLA for
example do not accept them for a driving licence application as "
they’re not absolute proof of identity".

I am a British citizen but do not have a passport - does that mean I
should
have my birth certificate with me to prove I'm British ? I also have
to
admit I haven't stayed in a hotel for many years so wouldn't even think
of
taking it with me.
