Are you interested in getting involved in CHESS?
The Consortium of Higher Education Support Services with Deaf Students
(CHESS) - who are we?
THE MISSION STATEMENT
"To increase choice, access and quality of provision for deaf and hard
of hearing students entering and undergoing Higher Education."
AIMS
a) To disseminate and promote research into, good practice
b) To support all Higher Education Institutions in developing good
practice
OBJECTIVES
CHESS should:
* have a cross-institutional Planning Group with a Convener to
co-ordinate and organise the work of CHESS.
* hold meetings open to all, to develop sector expertise on
supporting d/Deaf students in HE.
* respond to requests for the discussion of issues.
* disseminate information e.g. minutes of meetings; sector
developments through a mail-base list.
* consult with the list and other interested groups to provide
responses to issues relating to the Mission Statement.
The CHESS Planning Group want to expand the number of people working
closely with us, eg in planning specific events, or responding to
requests for information and guidance to others working in the sector.
This is a great opportunity for you to get involved in contributing to
training events and discussions around areas of good practice. This
might include attending a few meetings each year.
CHESS is widely known in the sector and has hosted numerous successful
conferences/ open meetings over the years; it is hoped that this will
continue with vigour in the future. We also collaborate closely with
other organisations, such as SKILL, and NADP to improve inclusion for
d/Deaf students in HE.
Applicants are particularly welcome from d/Deaf people or people with
expertise or professionals supporting d/Deaf students. All positions are
on a voluntary basis.
If you are interested in a greater level of involvement with CHESS,
please send a letter, summarising any relevant experience and your
particular interests, to Sheenagh Hull, Chess Convenor by email -
[log in to unmask], or in writing to - Sheenagh Hull, Equality
