Hi
The Up side
The nursery my children attend have had this facility for over 2 years now.
All parents, myself included, value the facility as it means that we do not have to wait to get in.
With the scanner is also a 4 digit code.
Without the machine the issue mentioned by Simon below could still arise - "sorry I was not informed that this parent could not enter".
Now the Down side.
The main reason for its use seems to be that the nursery can work without a receptionist.
When a parent uses the machine and the door lock releases, they enter. On a number of occasions I have followed in behind another parent without having my finger scanned or entering my code.
Having my finger print digitally recorded bothered me not, losing a human presence to act as a barrier and record bothers me much, my comment above notwithstanding.
Whilst many of us are DPA practitioners (I take the liberty of including myself) we are also risk managers (even if we just do DPA).
The issue is less about DPA and more about physical security.
Paul

Well, this takes the biscuit.
Can a parent refuse?
"I know you look like Mr. Howarth and your Son is waving and saying "Hi Daddy", but unless we have your fingerprint
we can't let you take your child".
This seems to be an abdication of common sense.
I wonder what will happen when one parent tells the nursery that the other parent is not allowed access due to a
court order and the possibility of abduction and they don't remove the finger print. The S**t will hit the fan then.
I'm reminded of Little Britain "The computer says 'no'".
Simon Howarth.
