We do not provide automatic extensions for students with SpLD - not all
students require extensions, and feedback from some of our students has
suggested that a blanket extension policy might actually be a hindrance,
as it can eat into the time allotted for the next assignment/create a
clash with a deadline for another module.
However, we do recommend to Faculties that they look favourably on
requests for extensions from students with SpLD. Typically, Faculties
will grant a one week extension for a student with SpLD. Should the
student require longer that this, they would need to submit mitigation.
Students are required to request extensions from their course tutor in
advance of the deadline, and these requests are granted at the
discretion of the Faculty.
Hope this is helpful,
With best wishes,

we expect students to complete their work within the normal deadlines,
including any support help. we do, however, issue coursework many weeks
in advance, and often at the start of the year, so the issue is perhaps
more of students getting started than needing extra time.

I agree, however most of our students are given access to a proof reader
and in order to get this completed in time for the deadline they have to
ensure their work is finished a week beforehand to send for
proofreading.
Therefore they are getting less time to produce their work - hence a
recommendation for an extension policy.

We would not automatically provide an extension for dyslexia. We
believe there is enough time for students to meet coursework deadlines.
If some unexpected difficulty arose which prevented meeting the due
date, it would be for the academic department to consider granting an
extended deadline, based upon the evidence available.

Do any other HEIs have a policy of an automatic extension to assignment
deadlines for students with dyslexia?
If so, would you be willing to share it with me?
