We've also used ALF to top up funding for students whose support exceeds
the DSA allowance. Skill also produce a leaflet with information about
different charitable trusts, which might be helpful:

The Snowdon Award Scheme might be a helpful place to start - they
provide funding for students with physical disabilities to help them
complete FE, HE or training: http://www.snowdonawardscheme.org.uk/
Hope this is helpful,
With best wishes,

My thoughts entirely.
The reason the DSA is paid is because the student is incurring
additional costs. Therefore once the DSA runs out the student could be
argued to be running into financial difficulty. AtoLF can then
legitimately be used.....provided the HEI's ALF panel sees it that way
of course! In exceptional circumstances there is no limit to the amount
a student can receive......

Subject: Grants for Postgraduate Science Student
We have a student who needs a specialist lab assistant for her
postgraduate microbiology project. Her DSA does not cover the amount
needed, which means that she may not be able to cover the costs of the
project she wishes to do.
Does anyone have any experience of successfully applying for grants for
students in a similar siuation? It would be really helpful to know if
there are organisations/companies/individuals who we could apply to for
funding for this student.
Many thanks
