Apologies if this is one of those topics that keeps coming up!
I have come across conflicting advice about what is appropriate for
scribes in exams - in particular whether or not they should be
familiar with the subject area and whether or not they should be the
student's usual notetaker. There seem to be good arguments on both
sides for both of these questions. In addition the answer seems to
vary according to what the exam is (e.g. it's no good having a scribe
in Maths who doesn't know what the summation symbol is) and what the
student's disability is (e.g. if a student has some communication
difficulties it seems fair that they should have a scribe with whom
they have already built up a rapport). I'd be interested to find out
what the policy is at other HE institutions - whether it is oriented
to a case by case approach or whether it is dictated in a blanket way
(e.g. "Students can't have notetakers who are specialists in there
area of study")
Thanks
