It depends on the content. Many adult records can be got rid after 6
years but it is possible that an adult has been in contact with Social
Service since childhood and the file may contain adoption information
some of which needs to be kept for 100 years.
Serious "weeding" of the files need to be done at regular intervals by a
qualified Social Worker who ought to know what should and should not be
kept.
If this is not practical to weed the file, it should be kept in line
with the longest retention time and you should think about how you
justify stretching Principle 5.

Subject: [data-protection] Retention of Adult Social Care Files
Hello all,
I've been asked to decide whether there is a case for destroying adult
social care files 6 years after the last contact was made. I can't help
but think that there is some statutory guidance for this but I can't
find it. The RMS-GB say that its common practice to archive these
permanently but doesn't mention statute.
Can anyone point me to the correct statutory guidance if there is some?!
Thanks
Sarah
