These schemes are based around a subject area as a point of focus or
interest – so from a theoretical pint of view they could be seen as
communities of practice:

They also appear to have some sense of the ‘novice to expert’ model (see
P.Benner), but also suggest, perhaps, that the whole university is a
learning organisation along the lines along the lines described by Senge:
