Hi,
I'd say that the interpreter MUST see the material in advance in order
to prepare a good translation.
If the interpreter is qualified, ie Member of the Register of SL
Interpreters, or ASLI full member, then they are bound to be
confidential, and will be used to dealing with confidential and
sensitive material. However, there may be issues of security and
potential value of the paper in the wrong hands. I've worked where there
was strict written agreement in advance on the security of the paper (to
be kept in locked premises, etc) or the paper only viewed under
controlled conditions (within a college exam office, or allocated space
within a University), rather than allowed off site. Similar
arrangements if the paper is to be passed to someone to modify the
carrier language.
Note - you may also want to consider if the interpreter (or
language-modifier) can consult with anyone, and if so, who - eg named
lecturer/exam author to clarify intent of the question.
Best wishes,
Sheenagh

Subject: Giving copies of exam material to BSL interpreters in advance
Apologies if this is a question that has come up many times before. I am
trying to write some guidelines for the use of BSL interpreters in
exams. Is it usual to give the interpreter a copy of the exam material
in advance (as one would with course material) so that they can prepare
themselves? Are there ever any issues of exam confidentiality arising
from this?
Thanks
Paul
