I am not clear why giving the details to a stranger over the phone would be
more secure than sending the details to a known address by post. After all,
any cheque sent in the post would contain the same details.
No, I don't think you were paranoid.

Subject: [data-protection] Magazine subscription
A man rang me up saying he was from a magazine I subscribe to (for years).
Did I want to try their sister magazine - 5 issues for £5.00 instead of
£15.00.
Why not I said. He then asked me for my bank details - sort code and bank
account number. I said well you've got those already. I can't use them he
said, not allowed. I wasn't prepared to give them to him and asked could I
ring him back or could they put the offer in the post. He said that by
sending my details back by post I was potentially letting anyone see the
details if they got lost or stolen. Also, that my sort code and bank account
number was no good to anyone.
I refused to give my details - was I being paranoid ???
