Years ago I was in a similar position. We each had an appointment with
the manager, at 15 minute intervals. I was on for about 3pm. Each
person went in, came out, cleared their desk and walked out, often in
tears. I rang my wife to say I was about to be made redundant. I was
then called in and the manager said "You are the first of the people in
the Department who are keeping their jobs", and indeed all the others
that followed me kept their jobs as well.
I don't see any good way of handling these sorts of things, but Majgan's
case does seem to be particularly poorly handled.

I understand that it is regarded as bad practice to give out this sort
of news on a Friday, because people then have the whole weekend to brood
over it, while unable to take any useful action (like starting to look
for a new job). Maybe being told on Monday is better anyway?
ps. What percentage would you put on the probability that your Friday
interview would be to tell you bad, rather than good, news?
