Because Cambridge publish their results, and your would-be employer could
check the published list? (I don't know if Cambridge actually do that, but
Edinburgh do and I expect that even if they didn't reply directly they would
be obliged (FoI) to tell you which issues of the Scotsman carried the 1983
graduation lists. You might even be able to ask for a copy of the relevant
graduation programme pages.)
Anyway, if the qualification matters, surely the employer would require all
the relevant certificates to be produced as a condition of employment?
