Why have an exam at all? Why have an essay? Why have a seminar? Why have
a lecture? Why have a university? Sorry, just being deliberately
provocative.
In David Lodge's novel "Changing Places", the liberated students of Euphoric
State University US of A mark their own exams. How about that? No further
wworries about pressure, discrimination, admin, ......

Absolutely right, Gerard, in my opinion. I think there would be enormous
advantages for everybody -- except, of course, for the managers and
administrators who would have the impossible job of planning the room
allocations and invigilations. I think most exams should be untimed.
Mind you, as a student I wouldn't welcome such a change.
