Hello All,
I am looking for some sharing of good practices concerning the initial
screening of students who may have dyslexia....
- Do you do an initial screening with a student who has not yet
been diagnosed with dyslexia?
- If so, does this screening get passed to the Specialist Tutor or
Educational Psychologist to feed into the diagnostic test?
- Roughly what percentage of students do you refer for a
diagnostic test? i.e. do you, as Disability Advisers, take the decision
that a student does not have dyslexia, and therefore don't refer them to
the Educational Psychologist?
We currently undertake a screening (which is in the form of several
questions - no spelling, reading or writing tests), but refer 100% of
students onwards for a diagnostic test. The reason we do this is because
we are concerned that, if a student has dyslexia, and we took the
decision that they didn't and so didn't refer them onwards, they would
slip through the net. Because of this, we are pondering on the
usefulness of the screening that we do.
I would appreciate examples of practice and/or advice!
