I'm guessing there was a trade show or a conference. I have not yet seen it
in marketing literature, though. I agree that it does seem to be rather more
than coincidence.

I am not aware of its nature, but this does lead me to think that there must
be some "advice" doing the rounds within the marketing community which
explicitly says that this sort of activity is OK.
Perhaps it has been promoted by the manufacturers of the equipment, or by
some "working group" within a marketing association. However, the sudden
increase in the visibility of this sort of messaging makes me think it's not
a co-incidence that lots of marketers have decided to go down this route at
pretty much the same time.
