Interception and Monitoring Law - Free to View Live Webcast - JISC Legal -
Wednesday, 16 May 2007 – 2.00pm to 3.45pm
As a member of IT staff in a UK college or university, you may be able to
access the personal disk space and personal web space for staff and students
at your institution. In addition you may be able to access the email boxes
and records of web pages visited by staff and students.
You will want to know when and how it is legal to access another person's
email account, computer hard drive or network storage. Reasons for doing
this might be related to long term staff absence, student disciplinary
investigation, and even antivirus scanning. Other examples include criminal
investigations.
JISC Legal aims to inform and assist operational staff who are faced with
the daily challenge of managing large amounts of personal and private
information but who are permitted to scrutinise and monitor it only in
limited ways.
- What staff and student communications can be legally monitored and what
cannot?
- If, for example, you want to access the emails and personal workspace of
an employee, who is on long term leave, how can you do this lawfully?
- If you are approached by the police for records of a student’s internet
access and email usage that they suspect of being involved in criminal
offences what should you do?
These and other relevant questions will be examined and answered by the JISC
Legal webcast to be broadcast live on the internet on Wednesday, 16 May 2007
from 2.00pm to 3.45pm.
