There are ways to fight back. For example, at least one of my suppliers
who has insisted that I supply them with a passphrase (which they will
inevitably ask me about in a phone call one day) is something like
"<company x> has a stupid passphrase scheme".
Although we are probably fighting back against the wrong people.
