HEFCE has announced an overall rise in funding for UK universities of 6.4%.
This money is intended to fund a 5% expansion in student places. However,
UCU has warned that for one fifth of universities the allocations translate
into a real-terms cut in funding for 22 universities. A cut in HEFCE's
budget allocations for widening participation, combined with an inflation
level of 2.7%, will mean around 22 UK universities will see their funding
decrease in real terms. The effects of the allocations might have been
worse had some universities not recruited extra students, leaving a large
swathe of UK universities dependent on student demand

to have huge drops in funding compared to 06-07.
