I think you could have refused to have your prints taken - one assumes
that your prints would only be used for eliminating your prints from
those belonging to the burglars. My cynical brain tells me that if you
submitted your prints to the boys in blue that it is very likely that
your prints would be added to some sort of database 'for future
reference' 'just in case'. No doubt the media would hail this as a
'stroke of genius' if in the future you were convicted as some sort of
longstanding menace to society.
Of course, my rational side tells me that volunteering your prints would
help the police identify which prints belonged to you and which belonged
to the criminals.
Ronan.

But the question remains - why?
Is it the criminal connotations? If this is the case, when my house was
burgled and the police wanted my dabs so that they could work out which
prints were the burglar's and which prints were mine, should I have
refused?

Most notably, people are less afraid of having their photograph taken.

What is the difference between a fingerprint, obtained quite fairly and
openly by a school, and a school photograph, obtained and held in many
schools?
