Hi there Suzie,
You will find that some screen readers have problems with PDF's
because they are often Graphics rather than text and so the screen
reader just registers a large picture. Chosen formats for VI can be
normal text (word doc or Plain text email) or, even better, DAISY which
is synchronized text and speech. If you need more info then feel free to
give me a call as we work closely with the ALT format website that is
helping schools and institutions comply with the DD act and so have
quite a bit of "impartial" info on this as well as some tools that can
help you with conversion! Wink!

Kind Regards

Subject: Format of documents eg. PDFs
Dear All,
Following on from the recent discussion about charging for provision of
e-books for visually impaired students from publisher, please can you
ask your advice on format of documents for VIPs. If we supply documents
etc in pdf format does this cause major problems, if so, what are the
issues with this? Is, for instance, supplying items as a Word document
more accessible. How do you convert a pdf document into a more
accessible document, what kind of format do you convert it into.
Many thanks
Suzie Kitchin
