Hi Sumara,
As far as I am aware, as Brian has already pointed out, most of the
so-called bulk scanners will depend upon the availability of single sheets,
so this would never solve the problem of scanning ordinary textbooks. I
guess the question really is just how fast do you want to scan? I scan tons
of books, both for my own use and for students, and, at a rough guess, I
would estimate that I am now scanning at a rate of about 5-6 DPSs per
minute; i.e. something like 10 to 12 pages per minute. This means polishing
off 300-page books in something like half an hour to 40 mins. This is using
a standard Epson scanner with Omnipage, with a setting of 3 seconds between
page turns, and this gives me, I would say, an accuracy rate of around 98
per cent. Certainly good enough to produce a nice clear reading text. I
don't think that's bad for a very cheap off-the-shelf scanner and OCR
package. I scanned three reasonable-sized paperbacks alone on Sunday, for
example. Of course the time element is always going to be considerably
longer if you are editing in order to produce a 100-per cent perfect text,
but is this absolutely necessary? Hope that's of help.
Paul.

Subject: Bulk Scanner
Hi all,
I wonder if anyone can help me. I have a blind student who currently has
his course information scanned into electronic format. Through various
people I have heard that there is a bulk scanner that will scan textbooks
very fast. This will not only save money, but also time. Has anyone come
across one of these at all?
Kind Regards
Sumara
