Hi all
I have to admit that 'most' LEA's seem more that happy to accept
recommendations from me to alter minor things in Access reports such as
additional prrofreading or tutor support or a small piece of equipment
that will support the student, as long as I can back this up with a
justification. This has to be benefical for the students otherwise their
DSA is further eaten into by the cost of a re-assessment for something
minor.
As someone who used to do full needs assessments back in the day when we
are allowed ,I'm actually glad we can no longer do this as there was
such a massive difference in what was produced over the sector - but we
do need more input as Liz said we understand the course implications and
reality of being a student 'here'.

I agree, but I also know more about the student's course and if they
need, for example, an increase in tutoring hours to take account of a
dissertation they have to produce, is it really necessary to return to
the Access Centre to amend the recommendation? Are there not enough
delays already?
Bridging the Gap also says that DOs 'advise on the particular needs that
may arise from specific courses'.

Dear All
This question has not gone away. Having talked to an LEA this morning,
they are intending to bring in a policy for 1:1 tuition based on a
gospel truth attititude to the example of 23 hours quoted in Claire
Jamieson's report.
Despite the DfES assurance that recommendations will still be based on
student need, we need to be more pro-active about this now or the
implications for the next academic year are not pleasant.
Is anyone actually doing anything about this with the powers that be??
Also, the LEA refuses to take Disability Officers recommendations and
insists on going back to an Access Centre for even very small changes to
recommendations - apparently DSOs are considered to have an interest if
they are arranging a student's support. This is despite the DfES
guidance to the contrary. Any comments?
