Calling all Widening Participation and Disability Practitioners in HEIs
Widening Participation and Disability Forum Meetings
Do you know :
*disabled learners are still one of the most under represented groups of students in higher education?
*what your legal responsibilities are to disabled learners in the WP context?
*how you can make outreach activities more inclusive?
*how disabled students access support in higher education?
*how you can embed WP in your institution's disability equality scheme?
An invitation
Action on Access is inviting you to take part in an innovative opportunity for staff who work with higher education students. We are organising four free forums to enable WP and disability staff from HEIs to spend time identifying how they can work together to benefit disabled students, enhance WP activity, help embed WP within institutional planning and contribute to creating more inclusive higher education provision.
The dates and venues for the events in 2006 are:
21st June - 11:00 to 13:00 London: London Metropolitan University
29th June - 10.30 to 13.00 London: London School of Economics (small Heis)
5th July - 13:00 to 15:00 Leeds: Leeds Metropolitan University
The forum sessions will include presentations, examples of current practice, discussion and an opportunity to work through a self-review tool focussing on WP and disability issues.
Objectives:
*Share expertise to provide a successful experience for under-represented students.
*Allow WP and disability practitioners to work together.
*Explore how to support disabled learners participating in WP activities.
*Devise methods to raise the profile of disabled students along with other under-represented groups.
We are also asking delegates to volunteer to deliver a 10 - 15 minute informal talk during the seminars, which focuses on where WP and disability staff are working well together. Examples that provide a way forward for others would be particularly welcome.
Please draw this event to the attention of your counterpart in WP or Disability. It would be beneficial if WP and Disability practitioners from the same HEI attend the forum and there is space to indicate this on the attached form. We are able to cater for up to 20 practitioners in each forum meeting.
Places will be reserved on a first-come-first served basis. Booking Form attached to this email.
Many thanks
