International Data Transfers Briefing
Data Protection Law & Policy is organising an International Data Transfers
Briefing (8:30am - 1:00pm) on Thursday March 23 in London to help you work
out the most effective method of legitimising international data transfer
for your organisation.
The International Data Transfers Briefing is being co-hosted with City law
firm Field Fisher Waterhouse.
http://www.e-comlaw.com/DataTransfers
The Article 29 Working Party's latest guidance on international data
transfers underlines privacy regulators' determination to persuade companies
to use frameworks such as Binding Corporate Rules, Safe Harbour and the EU
Model clauses to protect data rather than rely on Article 26 Exemptions.
The International Data Transfers Briefing will examine the different options
available to companies against the changing background of European policy.
Expert speakers will examine:
Getting around the ban-the official stance: Eduardo Ustaran, solicitor with
Field Fisher Waterhouse will focus on the Article 29 Working Party's
guidance as to how Article 26(1) of Directive 95/46 should be understood and
applied by data controllers intending to initiate data transfers to
countries which do not ensure an adequate level of protection.
Binding Corporate Rules: Global Business General Electric became the
first company to win authorisation from the UK Information Commissioner to
transfer employee‚s data outside the European Economic Area using binding
corporate rules. Our expert speaker will examine how the rules work in
practice, what needs to be done to obtain authorisation and the prospect of
a pan-European approval process
Model Contracts: Nynke Wiseman of Kennedy Van der Laan
(see http://www.kvdl.nl/people/people.cv.cfm?MedewerkerID=NWI&StatusID=ALL )
will talk about her experiences advising multinationals on data transfers
and the difficulties they face when operating on a pan-European basis.

Simon McDougall, Senior Manager, Deloitte & Touche presents a case study of
implementing a data transfer strategy in an international organisation.
