Clearly Sir Ian Blair should have a preamble before his calls are put
through that this call may be recorded for xxx purposes. (choose your own
words)
According to the Evening Standard Michael Winner records all his phone
conversations. When told about Sir Ian Blair's faux pas, and that he didn't
tell the person speaking to MW was bemused that he didn't.
The same paper said that if Sir Ian Blair had held a mike at a distance from
the phone rather than recording directly on the phone, that there would have
been nothing wrong with what he did.
I also gather that if he was only using for personal purposes then that
would be all right. Clearly if you are doing something like that at work it
is going to be shown to someone else/used for organisational purposes.
