to looking up the address and phone number of the person you are looking
for, also gives a listing of the person's neighbours phone number and

It is the same technology that allows us to book at a hotel anywhere in the

The technical term for it is data warehousing (or possibly data pooling).
Until recently it there was an argument against having a single ID number,
so that there wasn't an exchange of data between Government departments.
Now we have the likely ID card - so that has gone by the board.
