I only saw the 2nd half of the Despatches programme which was
essentially all about the encroachment on civil liberties brought about
by the existence of huge amounts of CCTV data, ID card databases and
police DNA databases, over which the general public has little control.
The case I found most interesting was one of a student whose
fingerprints were taken when they were a witness (not the accused) to
one crime, being matched up to the theft of mail from a mailbox for
which he was then arrested some two years later. It transpired that the
reason why the stolen post had his fingerprints on them was that they
were his own Xmas cards that he had posted! The basic "view" of the
programme maker was that ID card legislation, and the widespread
retention of DNA data (even of people who are innocent of any crime)
contravened the basic principles of "habeas corpus", and amounted to
"gleichschaltung". Lord Falconer was interviewed on the subject
essentially saying that the ends justified the means, whilst the
programme maker clearly disagreed. It was an interesting piece, but
didn't really say anything we didn't already know......

Not quite sure if I should be interested in this or not?
Leaving aside that the only part of gleichschaltung I could figure out
was gleich "directly", I had to babelfish the rest which gave me
synchronisation.
More information if possible please!! (I may just be being thick, so I
apologise in advance).
Simon.

The following is passed for the information of anybody interested in
this subject.
There was an interesting Dispatches programme on channel 4 last night
covering some aspects of one facet of a Gleichschaltung.
The programme contained many linkages and potential DP issues when
considered on the whole.
