I agree, I think this is something for the Unions.
I suppose it would be wise, if you do decide to agree to the request, to
consider the split of people in the organisation. For example, if you have a
thousand people and you find that 975 are in a Union, I would argue that you
are potentially giving away sensitive identifiable information, especially
if the information is going to be further matched. You are essentially
saying that if you pick any individual, there is a 1 in 39 chance that they
are NOT in the Union, and as any gambler will tell you, those are pretty
good odds. I suppose it depends on what you think is a reasonable proportion
and the likelihood that assumptions will be made on the data provided
(rightly or wrongly).
Hope this makes sense.
Simon.

Doreen,
It's just numbers, isn't it? But do you actually have access to the
figures? Does your organisation require a staff member to notify the
organisation if he/she decides to join a union?
I would think the question would be better put to the union(s), rather than
the Council.

All
I have received a request as to how many employees are members of a
Union. How many Unions and how many members in each.
I can see no problem with this as it would not identify individuals but
as Union information is sensitive information (although as I have said
does not identify individuals) just thought I'd get your views. Can't
see that it would do any good - unless they are trying to work out how
many did/did not go on strike re. the pensions fund.
Any thoughts welcomed..............
